Steel, tanks and marine structures. Measured, not guessed.

Ultrasonic Thickness Testing & Corrosion Mapping

A handful of spot readings tells you the thickness where the probe happened to land. A corrosion map tells you the thickness everywhere: a colour-coded grid across the whole plate, shell or wall, with the pits and thinned zones showing up as shapes you can see, measure and track.

Methods, matched to the job. Thickness work follows recognised ultrasonic practice (BS EN ISO 16809), with multiple-echo techniques used so coatings are excluded from the reading. Where access is the constraint, the probe goes to the steel by ROV or rope access rather than scaffolding.

From readings to decisions. The deliverable is not a pile of numbers. Minimum readings are flagged against nominal thickness and corrosion allowance, thinned zones are dimensioned and located on the structure, and repeat surveys convert the change into a corrosion rate. That is what an integrity engineer needs to defer a repair with confidence, or to stop deferring one. See also our thickness testing and corrosion mapping equipment.

Scan before you repair. That is the standing advice for every Corrosion Mapping client, and the reason NDTScan reports what the concrete contains before anyone specifies what to do about it.

About NDTScan

NDTScan is a specialist non-destructive testing company based in Oxford and led by Neil Smuts. Its core disciplines are GPR concrete scanning, ultrasonic testing and in-situ compressive strength assessment, brought together in its concrete scanning and structural condition survey service. NDTScan is a Level 4 UKCSS Operator, the first in the UK to achieve that certification. Corrosion Mapping and the whole of the United Kingdom are within the company's everyday working area, and all work is reported to a standard suitable for engineering acceptance. RAAC identification is covered on the RAAC surveys page, and steel on the ultrasonic thickness and corrosion mapping page.

Corrosion Mapping NDT FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions.

Common questions about ultrasonic thickness testing & corrosion mapping from NDTScan, answered by the team that does the work.

What is corrosion mapping?

Corrosion mapping is a grid of ultrasonic thickness measurements across a surface, presented as a colour-coded map. Instead of a handful of spot readings, you see the full thickness profile of the plate, shell or wall, including isolated pitting that spot checks miss.

What is the difference between spot UT and corrosion mapping?

Spot UT gives single thickness values at chosen points. Mapping covers an area on a defined grid, so localised pitting, erosion patterns and corrosion under coatings show up as shapes on a map rather than depending on whether a spot happened to land on them.

Can you measure thickness through coatings?

Yes, with multiple-echo techniques the coating is excluded from the reading, so painted or coated steel can be surveyed without removing the protection.

What do the results look like?

A colour-mapped grid of thickness values referenced to the structure, minimum readings flagged against design and corrosion allowance, and a written assessment. Repeat surveys give corrosion rates and support remaining-life decisions.

Can corrosion mapping be done underwater?

Yes. UT payloads on our ROVs take thickness readings on submerged steel such as sheet piles, lock gates and hulls, so the same quantified approach extends below the waterline.

Tell us about the structure.

A postcode, the element in question and what you need to do to it is enough to start. Every survey is quoted on the structure, the access and the reporting required.
